Payasam or kheer is an all time favorite at home. We can gulp it at any time of the day.. 🙂 The traditional semiya/seviya (vermicelli) payasam is tweaked a bit here by replacing it with oats, a healthier option 🙂 Similar to oats porridge, but this oats payasam is made tastier with dry fruits and coconut milk. Oats, otherwise might be a boring ingredient. But if you prepare it in an interesting way like this, it would be loved by all. And the kids at home would also relish it as it is sweet and full of nuts . So do try this oats payasam the next time you plan for some dessert.
And don’t forget the health quotient. This payasam is healthy too. Oats being a nutritious food, which is rich in fiber, helps protect our hearts and provide us with energy. So you may have loads of this without guilt 🙂 This payasam has the added advantage of coconut milk and dry fruits too, to keep the little ones engaged and interested. Usually everybody will associate oats with the elder ones in the family..right? The health conscious ones, those suffering from illness etc. But including it in this form would make it enjoyable for everyone.
You may always adjust the sugar levels as per your taste and liking. Reduce the amount if you want it only mildly sweet. You can even omit the condensed milk if you are not a big fan of it. Oats, anyways would give this payasam the thickness that it needs. Another suggestion would be to replace white sugar with grated jaggery, which is even more healthier. And this would give it a ‘prathaman’ look, another sweet dish made mainly using jaggery. The color in this case would however change from white to light brown. Once the jaggery melts, it would infuse its color to the mixture.
