Meen pathiri is a very tasty snack, again, from Kerala, especially the Malabar region. If you are an avid follower of my blog, you would have noticed that many of my dishes are from the Malabar cuisine. And that is because, I belong to this wonderful land of foods, rich in flavors and tastes.
So meen pathiri is a very easy and delicious snack that does not require much prior preparations. It is healthy too, as it is a steamed dish, and very little oil goes into frying the fishes. Meen pathiri is usually prepared using fleshy fish varieties like seer fish/ king fish, pomphret, or even prawns. In this recipe I have used seer fish. For all those who like sea food, you will definitely love this dish as it is really scrumptious and filling.
So here are the four stages by which you can make meen pathiri. First marinate and fry the fishes, then prepare the masala using the fried fish, next make the rice flour covering, and finally filling the dough with the masala and steaming. So first clean and wash the fish pieces. Marinate the fish using red chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Let it rest for about an hour. Next heat little oil in a pan and shallow fry the fish pieces, until both the sides are cooked. Remove from the pan and once they cool down a bit, remove the bones, and cut them into smaller pieces. Keep them aside.
Next, Heat oil in a pan. Add onions and saute till they turn light pink. Add ginger garlic paste and green chili and saute till the raw smell goes off. Now add turmeric and red chili powder and mix. Next you can add the shredded fish pieces. Finally add the coriander leaves and set aside.
Next you have to prepare the rice flour dough. I have used Double Horse brand for making this covering. You may use any that is available and follow the instruction given on the packet on how to prepare it. This is how I prepare it. Take water in a pan with little oil and salt and let it boil. Once water boils, drizzle the rice flour over it. Turn off the flame. Let it sit with the lid on for 5 minutes. Then remove the lid and mix thoroughly. Next, mix onion, fennel seeds and coconut in a grinder until it forms a coarse paste. Add this mixture to the flour and mix well. So now our dough is ready.
Now take a small ball of the dough and roll it to a cookie size with hands. Make another one too. Place 2-3 tsp of filling inside and cover with the other sheet of dough. Press the sides so as to close the edges. Prepare all the dumplings like this and steam it for 20-25 minutes, until fully cooked. Serve hot.
