  1. Wash and then soak kadala or black chickpeas in water overnight, or for at least 8 hours.
  2. Then drain the water and add the soaked black chickpeas to a pressure cooker.
  3. To this, add onions, tomatoes, green chili, garlic, red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, salt and about 3 and 1/2 cups water.
  4. Mix well and pressure cook for 15 minutes.
  5. Then simmer and cook in lowest flame for another 5 minutes.
  6. Switch the flame off.
  7. Allow the pressure to release by itself.
  8. Then for seasoning, heat 2 tbsp coconut oil in a kadai/ pan.
  9. Splutter mustard seeds.
  10. Then add the curry leaves and red chili whole and saute for few seconds.
  11. Add the seasoning to the prepared kadala curry and mix well.
  12. Serve hot with puttu or idiyappam.
