Right Nutrition On The Go!

Our routine and lifestyles have changed a lot, haven’t they? We constantly find ourselves extremely busy with work and other activities. The world is striding rapidly, but then, isn’t it important to keep pace with this fast-paced world? It is important to take care of your health to keep up with the changing times to ensure that you travel a long way along with the rest of the world.

Eating a balanced diet is very important to remain healthy. A balanced diet contains all the essential nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber and hydration. Now the question is, are we getting enough of these essential nutrients through our daily diet? Are we consuming the daily recommended dose of these micronutrients?

Although we are all aware of the facts and figures related to food and health, we are not able to implement them in our lives. Due to the changes in our lifestyle, we have started facing multiple problems which have had their effects on our health. The prime reason for all these being deficiencies of micronutrients.

Iron is one of the vital micronutrients that keeps us active and full of life. Iron is required by our body for the production of hemoglobin and numerous enzymes. It also aids in proper immune function. The average adult male has about 1,000 mg of stored iron (enough for about three years), whereas women on average have only  about 300 mg (enough for about six months) (Reference–www.ucsfhealth.org). Deficiency of iron leads to anemia, wherein the hemoglobin count decreases drastically. As a result, the iron stores in the body also get depleted, a condition which is very difficult to repair.

Iron is not something that is synthesized by our body. So it should be absorbed from what we eat. The minimum daily requirement  of iron on an average is 18 mg (Reference-https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Iron-HealthProfessional/). Only about 10 to 30 percent of the iron you consume is absorbed and used by the body. The daily requirement of iron can be satisfied by eating food rich in iron like meat, poultry, seafood, and vegetables like, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, sprouts, beetroot, and beans. Consuming food rich in Vitamin C enhances the absorption of iron in the body.

Vitamins are also important micronutrients. Vitamin A is required for proper vision and cell growth and Vitamin C helps in fighting diseases. Eggs, butter, milk, carrot, and cereals are rich in Vitamin A. Whereas Vitamin C can be obtained from Kiwi, guava, oranges, spinach, tomatoes etc.

In today’s rushed lifestyle, it is very difficult to make sure that you get enough nutrients to keep you fit and healthy. Many times, we miss our focus on health and we end up gobbling random food items to satisfy our hunger. Although junk food is way tastier than most of the healthy stuff, always remember, these unhealthy fast food doesn’t help you in any way, except for adding empty calories. I myself struggle to keep junk away from my kids. Those creamy donuts, pastries, meat, puffs, chips, cookies all look so tempting. But they should be made a rare treat and not regular.
